GEMMA TORRAS VIVES^ʼ18SIPA^Co-founder of A4ED
Gemma is a second-year student pursuing a Master of Public Administration at the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University, specializing in technology and economic and political development. She is the co-founder of A4ED, a blockchain-based startup that aims to transform non-formal learning and achievements into opportunities for refugees. A4ED is currently a finalist in the SIPA Dean’s Challenge Grant and won first place in the Global Public Policy Network 2018 conference competition. Prior to SIPA, Gemma served as a legal expert for several multilateral organizations and as a volunteer for the Spanish Red Cross assisting refugees and migrants. She has worked in the field of ICT and social policy with UNESCO, UNDP, UN Women and Microsoft. Her interests include civic innovation, artificial intelligence, social entrepreneurship, and humanitarian affairs. Her goal is to leverage emerging technologies for development and humanitarian settings.
